Privacy Policy

Effective October 11, 2026
Spell Champ Texas is a spelling practice app for the UIL A+ Spelling word lists. Built by Moorman Labs. This policy explains what the app and its web pages at spell-champ-texas.expo.app collect, why, who helps us run it, and what you can do about it. Spell Champ Texas is an independent practice app and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the University Interscholastic League (UIL).

1. The short version

• A grown-up (a parent, guardian or teacher, 13 or older) sets Spell Champ up once with an account. Kids never have an account, never sign in, and never chat with anyone, including AI.
• A kid is a nickname and a grade band. Practice is saved on the device and syncs to the grown-up's account.
• No ads, no tracking, and we use no analytics tools. We never sell information.
• When a grown-up signs in and adds a kid, we keep the kid's display name, grade band and practice so the app works across devices, for families and for classes. We don't use it for anything else.
• Reset progress clears this device only. To delete what's saved in an account, use Delete kid or Delete account.

2. Who we are

Spell Champ Texas is made by Jordy Moorman, doing business as Moorman Labs. In this policy, "we" and "us" mean Moorman Labs. Our contact details are at the end of this policy.

3. What stays on the device before setup

Before a grown-up signs in, nothing is sent to us. The setup screens check that our server is reachable. That shows your device's IP address to our host, as any website visit would, and nothing else. Practice saved on a device before an update, or while it was offline, stays on that device until a grown-up signs in and it moves into their account.
The grown-up check (tick "I'm a grown-up", then press and hold) collects and stores nothing.
The word audio and sentences are built into the app, so practicing doesn't download anything. If the device reads a word aloud with its own voice, that happens on the device.
To remove this device's copy, go to More → For grown-ups → Reset progress → Everything, or delete the app. Your account keeps its copy.

4. Grown-up accounts

Spell Champ needs a grown-up account, for adults 13 or older: it holds the kids' profiles, family and class sharing, and sync across devices. You sign in with Apple or Google, so we never see a password. You tell us whether you're a parent, a teacher, or both.
When you sign in, we receive your email address and your name from Apple or Google, plus an account ID. With Apple, the email can be a private relay address that Apple forwards to you. With Google, Google also sends a link to your profile photo, which our provider stores with your account. We don't use it.
Your account is stored with our database provider, Supabase, on servers in the United States (Ohio). Your sign-in session is stored in this device's secure keychain.
If you use Sign in with Apple, we also keep one Apple token on our server, where the app can't read it. We use it only to tell Apple to end Spell Champ's access when you delete your account.

5. Kids' information

Kids don't sign in. Only a grown-up who is signed in with Apple or Google, and who has confirmed they're a parent or teacher, can add a kid. Adding a kid is how that grown-up agrees to let us collect and use the kid's information as this policy describes.
For each kid, we keep:
• the display name you type (a first name or nickname is plenty) and the avatar they pick
• their grade band (3-4, 5-6 or 7-8) and time zone, so "today" means their today
• each answer they type in practice, whether it was right, the word, the time, and the practice mode, plus a note when an answer was typed after "Show spelling" or a practice round didn't earn stars because it included a word the kid looked up
• progress and rewards: stars, levels, coins, streaks, their outfit, and any test dates a grown-up adds
• six practice settings: practice order, stop size, whether missed words come back, daily goal, and the two trouble-word rules
We don't collect a kid's age, birthday, email, photo, school, location, contacts or voice. Spell Champ has no chat.
We use kids' information to run practice, show progress to the kid and their grown-ups, keep it the same across your devices, and, if a parent approves a class, show the teacher practice on assigned words. We don't use it for ads, we don't build profiles for any other purpose, and we don't use it to train AI.

6. What syncs and what stays on this device

When you're signed in, kid profiles, practice, progress, rewards and class information sync to your account, so they match on every device.
These never leave the device: kid PINs, the daily reminder and its time, sound, haptics and speed settings, "Show spelling" marks in My Words (only the note in section 5 syncs), and a teacher's classroom passcode.
When a grown-up first signs in on a device that already has practice, that practice moves into their account as a kid's profile. We keep a small record of that move: a random code the app makes up and a count of what moved. It isn't your device's serial number or advertising ID.

7. Families and co-parents

The grown-up who creates a family is its owner. The owner can invite a co-parent with a link or code that stops working after 48 hours, remove grown-ups, and delete kids.
Every grown-up in a family can see all of its kids' practice, and each other's names and roles. Other families can't see your kids. A class teacher sees only what section 8 describes, and only after you approve.
Family invites and class codes leave the app only when you share them yourself with the iPhone share sheet. We don't send invite emails or texts.

8. Classes and teachers

Joining a class. A teacher shares a class code. When a grown-up enters the code, they see the class name and the teacher's name first. A kid joins only after a parent approves. From that day on, the teacher sees the kid's display name, grade band and avatar, and their practice on assigned words. The teacher never sees stars, levels, coins, streaks, or anything from before that day.
Teachers also see a list of the class's common misspellings, with counts and no names. A teacher can also open one student and see that student's own close misspellings of a word. A parent can take a kid out of a class at any time with Leave class.
Class links. A class link has the class code in its web address, so our web host's logs record it. The page has no analytics. A code can't add a kid without a parent's approval, and the teacher can make a new code at any time.
Students a teacher adds. A teacher can also add students who practice on the teacher's device, with no family account. For these students we keep the same kinds of information as in section 5: the display name the teacher types (we suggest a first name and last initial), an avatar, a grade band, a time zone, and their practice, progress and rewards.
Before using classes, a teacher confirms that they're a teacher or school staff member who will use Spell Champ with students they teach. The teacher and their school decide whether to add students, and they're responsible for having permission to do that under their school's rules. We use this information only to run the class.
A teacher can view or delete any student they added, at any time. A parent or a school can also ask us to review or delete a student's information (see "Your choices").
When a teacher deletes their account, their classes are archived, not deleted: the class name and assignment titles stay, and kids who joined through a family keep their practice with their family. Students the teacher added are deleted, with their practice.

9. Who helps us run Spell Champ

We use a few service providers. They handle information only to provide their service to us:
• Supabase stores accounts and synced information and runs sign-in.
• Apple and Google run Sign in with Apple and Sign in with Google. If you use Google, you can see or remove Spell Champ's access in your Google Account settings. If you choose Google, Google's sign-in code on your device may collect the information Google describes in its own privacy documentation.
• Expo hosts our web pages (this policy, Support, family invites and class links) and builds the app.
These providers keep technical logs, such as IP addresses, to run and protect their services.
We have no advertising or analytics partners. We don't sell or rent information, and we don't share it for ads. We share information with anyone else only when the law requires it.

10. Reminders

A parent can turn on one daily reminder. It's scheduled on this device, with the same words every day ("Time for spelling practice.") and no kid's name. Spell Champ doesn't use push notifications, so nothing about reminders is sent to us.

11. Keeping information safe

Information travels to Supabase encrypted. Database rules let each grown-up reach only their own family's and classes' information. Family invite codes, kid PINs and the teacher passcode are stored scrambled (hashed), never as plain text.
A kid PIN and the grown-ups question keep siblings and little hands out of the wrong place. They aren't a security lock.

12. How long we keep information, and deleting it

We keep account and kid information until you delete it, so practice and progress stay available.
Delete a kid. The family owner can go to More → For grown-ups → Family, open the kid, and choose Delete. This deletes that kid's practice, stars, coins and outfit from all devices.
Delete your account. Go to More → Account → Delete account, and sign in again to confirm. If you own a family, you choose: hand it to a co-parent, or delete the family and every kid's practice. A teacher's classes are archived and the students they added are deleted (see section 8).
If you used Sign in with Apple, we ask Apple to end Spell Champ's access. If Apple can't be reached, we keep trying automatically for several hours. If it still fails, we delete our copy of the token, and you can remove Spell Champ yourself in your Apple Account settings under Sign in with Apple.
Most of the deletion happens right away. Any step that doesn't finish is completed automatically in the background, usually within minutes. Afterward, you choose whether to keep this device's practice offline or erase it from this device too.
Our sign-in provider may keep security logs of sign-in events, such as IP address and email, for a limited time, including after an account is deleted.
We don't keep separate backups of deleted information.
We delete our security logs of family-invite and class-join attempts, and finished family invites, after 90 days.
Reset clears this device only. Reset progress → Everything erases what's saved on this device. It doesn't delete anything from your account. When you're signed in, Reset progress → This season starts a fresh season on every device, and earlier practice stays in your account. To delete saved information from an account, use Delete kid or Delete account.
Signing out stops syncing. Practice that's already on the device stays there.

13. Your choices, and how to ask us

A parent can, at any time:
• see a kid's information on the Progress tab and in the parent area
• change a kid's name or grade band, or take a kid out of a class
• stop us collecting more: sign out, and nothing new is sent
• delete a kid or the whole account, as described in section 12
You can also email us. Please write from the email address on your account, so we know the request is yours, and tell us which kid or student it's about. If you write from another address, we'll reply to the account's email to confirm. A school can ask about students a teacher added the same way. We answer within 30 days.
These choices are for everyone who uses Spell Champ, wherever they live.

14. Texas and other laws

We don't sell personal information, use it for targeted ads, or build profiles of students except to run Spell Champ. Spell Champ isn't a social app: there are no public profiles, no posting and no messages between users.

15. Changes to this policy

When this policy changes, we'll update this page and its effective date, and tell you in the app when we can. If a change affects how we use kids' information, we'll ask for consent again where the law requires.
